How To Get Through Writer’s Block

Writing this because I don’t know what to write about, ah yes, makes sense, does it not? Writer’s block has got to be one of, if not THE most annoying thing you can experience as a writer. If you have a deadline that only makes things worse by adding so much pressure for you on top of it all (my situation). Sometimes certain negative things may be going on in our life that makes us feel uninspired. Other times, if you’re anything like me, we are so happy that we don’t really have any anger or sadness  to utilize as muse. Whichever the case my be, this is how to get over writer’s block (P.S. these are merely based of off my personal experiences):

  1. Go out for a walk. More often than not this is what does the trick for me. Going out for a walk around my neighborhood with nothing but my thoughts. Occasionally, I take my phone with me and listen to music while I walk. Put your phone on Do Not Disturb, no distractions, and just take in everything around you. Nature and people are pretty inspiring if you look closely. I tend to do this when I’m not in the best of moods as well, a little alone time always helps.
  2. Talk to friends. Spend time with your friends, talk to them and ask them about their life. You might be surprised to find yourself inspired by some of the things they tell you.
  3. Watch a movie/tv show or listen to music. Movies, songs, and shows were all inspired by something. They were merely an idea in someone’s head that they managed to make into something that can be shared with others. It really is not much different than writing. Indulge in something new or maybe one of your favorites, and you may find yourself getting through your writers block.
  4. Spend time doing your favorite hobbies. We all have hobbies and they are called hobbies because they are things we actually enjoy doing. Whether it be painting or playing an instrument, spending time doing what you love might help you take your mind off your writer’s block and leave you feeling refreshed when it’s over.
  5. Clean. Before you think I’m crazy, let me just tell you that this works for me so often. It might work for you as well. When I clean I tend to feel a little less cluttered mentally and it gives me an odd sense of satisfaction. The fact that everything is organized is also a bonus!

Writer’s block happens to everyone, it is not an indicator on whether or not you’re a good writer. You should not allow yourself to feel so stressed out because of it. Instead, try doing some of the things listed above. Who knows, they might work for you. Regardless if they do or do not, realize that it will eventually pass and you will be back at it better than ever. Stressing yourself out only makes things worse, I’ve learned that from experience. So go ahead and relax, it will pass through.
