Audrey Was More Than Just Pretty

We all know her sweet smile, her trendsetting haircut, and her uncanny knack for simple stylish clothes; but what else do we know about Audrey Hepburn? Audrey would have been 87 today and most of the pictures shared of her are from when she was young. They all feature quotes about beauty and laughter. Audrey was significantly more than just a pretty face and a few quotes; she was a brilliant actress, a philanthropist, and an all around beautiful person.

One of the things Audrey was so proud of is one of the things we tend to ignore the most: her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. She cared very much for the wellbeing of children and she wanted to do all she could so that they were given proper education and protection despite detrimental situations. She understood that children shouldn’t be blamed for problems that they can’t control and they are truly the key to a better future. Not only was she an advocate for this in her early life but also well into her later life. However, for some reason we only want to recognize the beautiful young woman that she was and not the beautiful woman that she was in her old age.

Hollywood and society in general have a habit of disposing of women once we are no longer young and beautiful. When we cease to entertain them with our youthful mannerisms and childlike wonder, no one cares about us anymore. Even when Audrey was alive and well people talked about her as if she didn’t exist outside of her twenties. She always kept her trendy haircut, her clothes remained simple and stylish, and she never once stopped caring about people– so why does no one talk about her as an old woman? The goal for today should be for all Audrey fans, all feminists, and all philanthropists to acknowledge the amazing woman that Audrey was not only in her young age but also in her old. Don’t let her legacy be limited to her youthful beauty, she was so much more than that.
