Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Game of Thrones is back and everyone is ready to see who will take the Iron Throne, what will happen to Dany, and most importantly when will Jon Snow wake up from his very long nap. But recently Emilia Clarke has said what we’ve all been wondering since season one: why have we never seen any male genitalia?

The show is full of full frontal nudity scenes featuring the women of the show but none with the men. Even though Lena Headley’s shame scene was shot with a double, her entire body was shown as Cersei atoned for her sins. We’ve never seen even half as much nudity from the show’s male leads, mostly just some really nice butts. Emilia was probably half-joking about #FreeTheP butt (pun intended) we’ve all realized she’s right- there is an inequality with the amount of female nudity we see versus the amount of male nudity. The show’s viewers aren’t all straight cis males, a lot of them (myself included) are women.

Emilia pointed out the hilarious extra care that was taken for the men to hide their naughty bits, like the fuzzy pink sock Jason Momoa wore during one of their sex scenes. Usually, the cover is pretty basic but Momoa chose to go the extra mile. We’ve all become accustom to seeing a woman’s body bared on television and in movies, and I don’t think we’ve much questioned why we never see a man’s.

This seems like a petty feminist issue but there’s something more here. Women’s bodies are acceptable when being looked at for entertainment and sex but a man’s is usually taken more seriously. What if we want to see Jason Momoa’s disco stick, what if it added something new and edgy to the show like a nice pair of boobs does? Let’s be honest, the amount of nudity we see from women is simply for entertainment value- and that’s fine. But what us GoT fans really want, is to see what Podrick Payne is hiding in his pants. Kidding, we want to see men and women’s bodies treated equally, even if that means they’re both being wrongly sexualized.
